Whats the state of QMS in India?

QMS in India Quality is a much misunderstood concept especially in the Indian Manufacturing sector. Most of the industry is focused only on completing the documentation process required to get Quality certified which is almost mandatory for obtaining new business, again the documentation process is mostly done on a knee jerk basis. Inspite of dedicated Quality Teams I have seen complete lack of awareness about the real sense of Quality with the dedicated Quality Engineers.

There is a also a deep sense of fear with Engineers and an oft quoted word would be “Sir I have never done Quality Analysis for this type of parts before” which just dizzys me at times. Quality Documentation is limited to filling excel sheets even Dimensional Inspection Reports are mere copy paste items of previous parts and dont be surprised to find references to unrelated parts in submitted documents.

QMS in India So what should one do to build a Quality Culture in an Organization? As per my observation the following are the top three reasons why most of the companies have failed to instill a Quality culture in India are

  1. Lack of Resources ( Tools Required – Soft and Hard)
  2. Project Delivery exigencies.
  3. Better rates from Customers.

What according to you are the top three reasons?

Is quality everybodys responsibility?

quality everybodys responsibility Is your Quality Engineer being used for other tasks in your Organization? People say that Quality is everybody’s responsibility but here our experience is slightly different and we beg to differ. Quality consciousness can be everybody’s task but ensuring Quality should always belong to somebody or some group. And this entity must be empowered enough to take decisions. Just like everybody’s work is nobody’s work.

Making everybody responsible for the overall Quality means nobody is responsible for it. Depending on what your organization can afford set up and build your quality team. Ensure that the Quality team is placed at important gateways to identify issues at the right place. Only this can get you through. Just making your production guy responsible for Quality is a strategy bound to be doomed in the long run whatever the size of your Organization.

Is quality everybodys responsibility

So to have an effective Quality Management System set up in your organization and ensure that compliance objectives are met. Set up a responsible Quality Team. Let this Quality team be responsible for setting up the Quality Management System in the company. The production, dispatch, maintenance personnel can be part of the team but never held accountable.

quality everybodys responsibility The Quality head should be accountable. Set up clear Quality goals, documentation for relevant certification can be one of them, Use latest tools including QMS softwares. Review the tasks and progress on those tasks regularly only this can ensure an effective Quality Management System being implemented in your organization any thing midway might not get the desired results.

Can you outsource Quality

Can you outsource Quality?

Can you outsource Quality Well on the question of outsourcing one needs to identify which activities are core to an organization and if Quality Management  is one of them it obviously shouldn’t be outsourced.

However in India even core production activities are outsourced to teams so don’t be surprised to find contract labours working on piece rates for every activity in an organization, so one shouldn’t be surprised to find Quality Management System activities outsourced too.

outsourcing strategy

Can you outsource Quality Like with any activity there are obvious advantages and disadvantages of Outsourcing Quality activities.

The obvious advantages are

  1. Ability to limit costs by outsourcing

  2. They have no responsibility they will always work within their scope of work which can be pretty restricted at times.
  3. People might not follow their advice thinking that they are outsiders to the organization
  4. Consultants will work in their time and space.
